OpenAI Rolls Out GPT-6 With Intelligent UI in ChatGPT
OpenAI ships GPT-6 in ChatGPT with an Intelligent UI of buttons, forms and charts. Web-search answers start 44% sooner than GPT-5.6 Instant.
Wire notes
- GPT-6 rolls out today in ChatGPT for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users; Free and Go get it from tomorrow.
- GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant, per OpenAI.
- Sol and Luna models launched Sept. 22 for ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API; today they reach Chat.
- Intelligent UI works at thinking levels from Instant to Extra High, but not on the Pro level (GPT-6 Astra) or older desktop apps.
- ChatGPT already offers interactive charts since June and interactive modules for 70+ math and science topics since March.
OpenAI is releasing GPT-6 in ChatGPT worldwide, pairing the new model with an Intelligent UI that combines text, visuals, and interactive features such as buttons, forms, and charts. The rollout begins today in the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, and extends to Free and Go users from tomorrow.
For questions that require web search, OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. The model also decides better when to look something up and more reliably finds information that supports its answer. In an internal test of difficult problems, the company reports that GPT-6 addressed the key aspect of the user's question more often than GPT-5.6, though it did not publish a figure.
Which models power which plans?
In Chat, GPT-6 runs on GPT-6 Sol for the plans included in today's rollout, and on GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go users. The details matter for enterprise buyers:
- Enterprise access varies based on admin configurations.
- The models supporting ChatGPT Work and Codex stay unchanged with this update.
- GPT-6 replaces the 'Latest' option in the model menu, while GPT-5.6 Sol remains available as a separate option, according to OpenAI's help page.
The Intelligent UI feature is rolling out gradually on the web and on supported, updated apps, at thinking levels from Instant to Extra High. The Pro thinking level continues to run on GPT-6 Astra but does not support Intelligent UI, and neither do the older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows.
Sol and Luna launched on Sept. 22 for ChatGPT Work, Codex, and the API, when OpenAI said the models were not yet available in Chat. That gap now closes.
What does Intelligent UI actually do?
OpenAI says it trained GPT-6 to decide how each response is laid out based on the question. Responses can include buttons, forms, and charts — and ChatGPT can still answer in plain text when that format serves the user best.
The announcement also opens the door to on-demand tool creation. "You can also ask ChatGPT to create a tool for the task at hand, such as a calculator to explore how savings could grow, a bill splitter for dinner with friends, or a game you can play in the conversation," OpenAI said in the announcement.
Interactive output is not new to the product. ChatGPT already offered interactive charts, added in June, and interactive modules for more than 70 math and science topics, added in March, according to its release notes. Users who prefer fewer visuals can turn off the Layout and visuals setting on the web, though the help page notes some visual elements might still appear.
Why the streaming change matters
GPT-6 can begin providing answers even while it is still thinking or working with tools, and then share additional insights without waiting for the user to ask again. That shift compresses the perceived wait time in conversational search — the 44% faster start on web-search questions is the clearest evidence.
What does this mean for search and publisher traffic?
The competitive implications reach beyond OpenAI. Two of the company's tool examples — a savings calculator and a bill splitter — rely on generic inputs and public math. Search Engine Journal's Matt Southern observed in August that these tools are the easiest for Google's generative UI to replicate as it began appearing in AI Overviews. Calculator and converter pages could also face pressure from ChatGPT-created tools, which let users request and use utilities directly in the chat without leaving the conversation.
The announcement leaves one open question for publishers: it does not say how sources will appear when responses are presented as charts, comparisons, or tools. ChatGPT's search help page states that answers incorporating web search results might include citations, accessible via a Sources button whenever it is available.
What comes next
OpenAI says it aims for ChatGPT to gradually create more of the user interfaces needed for daily tasks. For brands and publishers, the immediate task is measuring how GPT-6's interactive, tool-bearing answers change referral traffic — and whether the Sources button keeps attribution visible as responses move further from plain text.
