McCann New York promoted Britt Nolan to chief executive officer (CEO) effective immediately, assigning the former North America chief creative officer leadership of the flagship office’s business and strategy and oversight of all U.S. clients.

McCann disclosed the appointment in an announcement shared with ADWEEK. Nolan will report to Andrés Ordóñez, whom McCann promoted to global chairman and global chief creative officer (CCO) in October.

What does Nolan now oversee?

McCann defines the role through two responsibilities:

  • Lead the business and strategy of the McCann New York office.
  • Oversee all U.S. clients for McCann.

The announcement does not specify reporting relationships with individual client teams. It also does not name a successor for Nolan’s former North America creative position or say whether the creative portfolio has been divided.

McCann says Nolan and Ordóñez worked closely together over the past year. Ordóñez’s endorsement was explicit:

“I’ve seen firsthand what an extraordinary leader, creative mind, and human being he is,” Ordóñez wrote in a statement. “He understands our clients, our people, and our culture, and has been instrumental in building the momentum we’re seeing in New York.”

Nolan now carries responsibility beyond the New York office, but McCann leaves the supporting organization chart unspecified.

Which client work supports the promotion?

McCann links Nolan’s creative leadership to four client wins:

  • Kroger
  • Easy-Off
  • Woolite
  • Resolve

McCann credits Nolan with leading creative work as the agency won those four accounts. The announcement provides no start dates, contract values, scopes or creative results for the engagements. It also does not say whether Nolan led every element of each project.

The four names give the appointment a concrete client context. They do not, however, establish performance against revenue or campaign targets. McCann cited no market-share, growth or effectiveness figures with the promotion.

The named wins support the creative side of Nolan’s record, while the measurable business case remains undisclosed.

How does this fit McCann’s leadership changes?

The appointment comes weeks after McCann global CEO Tyler Turnbull left for WPP Creative. McCann had promoted Ordóñez to global chairman and global CCO in October, and Nolan will report to him.

ADWEEK’s report does not state who now holds the global CEO title after Turnbull’s departure. It also provides no full reorganization chart showing how global, North American and New York responsibilities now divide.

The disclosed structure gives the flagship office a leader with prior North America creative authority and a new executive remit. A role focused on creative work now also carries New York business, strategy and U.S. client oversight.

The New York promotion sits within a wider executive transition, but McCann has not mapped all of its reporting lines.

What should marketers watch next?

McCann has set out broad duties for Nolan but no numerical targets, staffing commitments, client-team changes or timetable beyond the immediate start. The announcement also does not explain how the North America creative organization will operate after his move.

For agency clients, the most useful evidence will be whether McCann can show how Nolan’s experience with Kroger, Easy-Off, Woolite and Resolve informs the larger job. Any assessment now depends on operating and client disclosures that the appointment announcement does not provide.

McCann has cited four creative wins, but the next test is performance across business, strategy and all U.S. clients under a broader leadership structure.
