Apple Pulls Trade Desk Off iOS 27 Block List — for Now
Apple's new iOS 27 beta removes The Trade Desk's ad serving block, but WebKit's opaque hit list still covers ID5, LiveRamp, Audigent and Permutive — and could expand.
Wire notes
- Apple removed The Trade Desk's ad serving block from a new iOS 27 beta this week after the platform could not deliver ads on the latest iOS last month.
- WebKit's block list targets The Trade Desk and Unified ID 2.0, ID5, LiveRamp, Audigent and Permutive for cross-site user tracking.
- WebKit maintains a second, broader list spanning multiple ad tech and martech categories that could expand blocking to the entire ecosystem.
- Companies must download, decompile and analyze WebKit code to discover whether they are on the list.
- Editor-in-Chief Allison Schiff said the iOS 27 block list "hits different" than ATT because it blocks some companies from conducting parts of their business entirely.
Apple has removed The Trade Desk's ad serving problem from a new beta version of iOS 27, sparing the demand-side platform from a scenario that last month left it unable to deliver ads to Apple device owners running the latest iOS.
The reprieve is narrow. WebKit's block list of data brokers and ad tech vendors that conduct cross-site user tracking remains a colossal wrench in the gears of programmatic analytics on Apple devices. On the list: The Trade Desk and its Unified ID 2.0 initiative, ID5, LiveRamp, Audigent and Permutive.
The bigger risk is expansion. WebKit maintains another list spanning multiple categories of ad tech and martech, which means the blocking could grow from a handful of scaled vendors to the entire ecosystem.
Why can't advertisers see the list?
That second list is obscure. A company would have to download, decompile and pick apart WebKit code to figure out whether it is on the hit list, according to the source report.
Apple's secrecy is deliberate. The company doesn't "think very highly" of the ad tech industry's ability to self-regulate, which is why it keeps its cards close to its chest, said Senior Editor James Hercher on this week's episode of The Big Story.
Hercher's observation sits apart from another fact: Apple has its own advertising ambitions.
How does this differ from ATT?
Industry pundits may feel déjà vu. Apple's AppTrackingTransparency framework paralyzed the mobile ad industry until solutions and workarounds — Conversion APIs among them — emerged.
The iOS 27 block list "hits different" than ATT, according to Editor-in-Chief Allison Schiff. ATT stopped ad tech players from using identifiers without consent. Apple's domain block list effectively blocks some companies from conducting parts of their business entirely.
The industry has not "really earned much benefit of the doubt on data practices," Schiff said.
What comes next?
The blocked vendors include:
- The Trade Desk and Unified ID 2.0
- ID5
- LiveRamp
- Audigent
- Permutive
For now, The Trade Desk has a working path to Apple inventory through the iOS 27 beta. Every other company on WebKit's lists faces the same discovery problem: no public disclosure, no formal appeals process described in the source reporting, only code to decompile.
Whether Apple extends the block list beyond these scaled vendors to the broader ad tech and martech ecosystem will determine how much of the programmatic industry can operate on Safari at all.
