Zoom's 99% Awareness Is a Gift Marketers Can't Easily Spend
Zoom's VP of brand and content Josh Reed calls the platform's 99% unaided awareness "a gift" — one that also limits what consumers think the brand does.

- Zoom has 99% unaided brand awareness, per Josh Reed, VP of brand and content.
- Reed spoke at AdExchanger's Programmatic IO event in New York City earlier this week.
- Reed called the awareness figure "a gift" but immediately qualified the statement.
Ninety-nine percent unaided brand awareness would strike most marketers as a dream scenario. Josh Reed, Zoom's VP of brand and content, sees the catch.
"What a gift," Reed said of the figure, speaking at AdExchanger's Programmatic IO event in New York City earlier this week — before quickly qualifying the statement. Because it's a gift, and it also isn't.
The paradox is simple: everyone knows what Zoom is. That level of recognition, built during the platform's period of explosive mainstream adoption, means the brand no longer needs to introduce itself. Instead, it faces the harder task of expanding what people believe it stands for.
For a company whose name became shorthand for video calling itself, ubiquity sets a ceiling as well as a floor. When a brand owns a single use case in the public mind, every additional product story must work against the strength of that existing association.
Reed's framing, delivered on stage at Programmatic IO, points to the strategic question now in front of Zoom's marketing team: how to convert near-total awareness into a broader, more commercially valuable understanding of the platform. Recognition is solved. Meaning is the open problem.
It is a challenge familiar to any brand that has become a verb or a category default. The awareness asset is real, and Reed called it a gift — but the qualification he attached signals where the work lies. Zoom's marketers will spend the next phase of their efforts not on being known, but on being known for more.
