Target will offer thousands of holiday gifts priced at $5 or less, part of a value-first holiday strategy announced Wednesday aimed at financially stressed shoppers.
The retailer's promotional calendar is dense. A Deal of the Day runs every day from Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, with each deal previewable the day before. Early Black Friday deals run Nov. 5 to Nov. 7, followed by limited-time offers every weekend after that.
The assortment includes more than 8,000 new gift items, and over half of them are exclusive to Target. The company is also promoting what it calls "new AI-powered shopping experiences" across its digital channels.
Why is Target leading with price?
The playbook mirrors moves across U.S. retail. Consumer sentiment has plunged amid inflation and job worries, and some recent reports suggest holiday sales could dip compared with last year.
Bank of America analysts said earlier this month that store checks at Target, Walmart, Costco, Tractor Supply, Dollar General and others in Nashville, Tennessee, found teams consistently emphasizing "value, sharp opening price points, and targeted promotions as consumers remain selective."
Target chief merchant Cara Sylvester framed the strategy in a statement: "Guests tell us they want to give gifts that are thoughtful and personal, while feeling good about what they're spending."
What does this change for the holiday season?
The season will test Target's merchandising operation under CEO Michael Fiddelke, who arrived in February. Toys remain a strength, but the turnaround in apparel and home will take time, according to the Bank of America report. The Nashville store "had a complete Pokémon section and our tour confirmed this product is on fire," the analysts said. A fan shop is scheduled to roll out later this month.
Target said its assortment includes "top toys from Lego, Barbie and Nintendo." The retailer also debuted a digital holiday kids catalog earlier this month that lets children save toys to a wish list.
In apparel and home, Target is leaning into a space luxury brands have struggled with lately: pricing for the aspirational luxury consumer. The retailer calls the approach "luxe-for-less gifting," with an assortment that includes:
- 100% cashmere starting at $25
- Pajamas from $10
- Holiday decor from $5
- Faux fur throws at $30
Can beauty and AI move the needle?
Target's new beauty section, launched after its breakup with Ulta, looks promising in Nashville, Bank of America analysts said. The open question is whether it can maintain or beat the high-single-digit growth the category has posted so far this year. For the holidays, Target is offering "new and exclusive gifts from prestige, emerging and global beauty brands at Target Beauty Studio."
The retailer is also rolling out AI tools in time for holiday shopping, as Gap and others have done. An AI assistant called "Ask Target" is in beta on Target's website and app. Customers can also use AI features that let them search with photos, access reviews and restock items.
For marketers and merchandisers, the season will show whether aggressive opening price points, exclusive product and AI-assisted discovery can offset a consumer base that keeps tightening its spend.
