Dateline Canada debuts Thursday, November 26, on Citytv and Citytv+ — the first international expansion of NBC News' true-crime franchise, under a licensing deal with Rogers Studios. The premiere runs two hours and investigates the 1990 disappearance of Elizabeth Bain, a University of Toronto student.
Diana Swain will host the spinoff. She's a former CBC News senior investigative correspondent and currently hosts The Investigators on CBC News Network. The U.S. version's host, Keith Morrison, began his journalism career in Canada and previously worked at CTV and CBC News.
The takeaway: NBC is now exporting one of its longest-running brands through licensing rather than building foreign bureaus.
What else moved this week?
MS NOW anchor Ali Velshi hosts a new special Sunday at 10 p.m. ET: Sparking Outrage: Data Center and A.I. Backlash. MS NOW senior reporter Josh Einiger contributes reporting, and the topic has become one of the key issues of next month's midterm elections.
MS NOW also issued an on-air apology Wednesday after falsely reporting that FBI director Kash Patel had traveled to Russia to meet with officials. Justice correspondent Ken Dilanian, who filed the initial report citing two anonymous FBI sources, said: "We regret this error, and we are transparent about when we make errors."
How is CNN betting on AI and subscriptions?
CNN announced this week it will join Google's news AI pilot program. The multi-year partnership, CNN said, provides enhanced content rights and enables experimental features in Google products to explore how generative AI can create additional engagement for its journalism.
On the distribution side, CNN's direct-to-consumer product, CNN All Access, expands to Canada and the United Kingdom on October 20. It has been live in the U.S. for nearly a year. Pricing:
- Canada: $7.99 CAD per month or $79.99 CAD annually
- U.K.: £4.99 per month or £49.99 annually
Where is BBC News expanding its reach?
BBC News, the broadcaster's flagship channel, is now available on YouTube in the U.S. The BBC says the move is part of a wider strategy to reach digitally native, younger audiences. The U.S. joins Australia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Poland in gaining access to BBC News via YouTube.
Who won recognition?
MS NOW senior contributing editor Michele Norris received the Freedom of the Press Career Achievement Award at the 2026 RCFP Freedom of the Press Awards on Wednesday night. Accepting the award, Norris honored journalists — including those at MS NOW — who have stood up to efforts to silence the press, saying the battle over press freedom "is not new ground."
For marketers, the week's signal is clear: legacy news brands are monetizing trust through licensing, streaming subscriptions and AI partnerships faster than they're losing linear audience.
