NBC News drew 6.74 million total viewers during primetime coverage of the 2026 midterm elections, a 117% surge over 2022 that made it the most-watched network of the night in broadcast and cable. Steve Kornacki's data wizardry helped propel NBC News to the No. 1 spot in both total viewers and the Adults 25-54 demo during Tuesday night's coverage, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The overall audience grew sharply. A total of 31.2 million viewers across 13 networks tuned in between 8 and 11 p.m. ET to watch the blue wave sweep across the nation as the Democratic Party won both chambers of Congress. That figure is up 23% from the last midterm election in 2022 — a gain of roughly 5.8 million viewers in a single two-year cycle.

How did each network perform?

NBC News set the pace in both measured categories during primetime:

  • NBC News: 6.74 million total viewers; 2.794 million in the Adults 25-54 demo. Up 117% in total viewers and 164% in the demo versus 2022.
  • ABC News: second place in both categories, with 5.19 million total viewers and 1.672 million demo viewers — gains of 57% and 86% respectively.
  • Fox News: first among cable networks in total viewers with 4.315 million, but only 771,000 in the demo. Down 42% in total viewers and 59% in the demo compared with 2022.
  • CNN: second in cable total viewers with 4.147 million, but No. 1 in the demo at 1.512 million. Up 59% in total viewers and 43% in the demo.

What does the split mean?

The results mark a clean division of the cable audience. Fox News held its lead in raw reach but shed well over a third of its 2022 audience, a drop of 42% in total viewers and 59% among Adults 25-54. CNN, by contrast, claimed the demo crown on cable — the audience advertisers pay a premium to reach — while trailing Fox News by roughly 168,000 total viewers.

Broadcast carried the night. NBC News beat every cable and broadcast competitor in both categories, and ABC News outdrew each cable network in total viewers by more than 850,000. Together the two broadcast operations pulled in nearly 12 million viewers, more than a third of the entire 31.2 million election-night audience.

The story of the night is turnout — of voters and of viewers. A 23% lift in midterm viewership over four years reverses the usual pattern of fading interest between presidential elections, and the demo gains at NBC News, ABC News and CNN suggest younger-skewing audiences returned to live coverage. For networks negotiating ad rates on news programming, the 2026 numbers provide the first concrete evidence since 2022 that midterm nights can deliver presidential-scale reach.
