Belk has secured $1.275 billion in new financing from Wells Fargo and Pathlight Capital, the department store chain announced Tuesday in a press release from Pathlight Capital. The five-year package consists of a $900 million asset-based revolving credit facility and a $375 million first-in, last-out term loan, and it replaces Belk's current ABL, FILO and securitization facilities.

The retailer will use the financing for capital needs, seasonal inventory and other corporate purposes. "This opportunistic financing represents an important milestone and reflects the continued strength in Belk's business by providing us with the flexibility to continue investing in our business and serving our customers," Belk CFO Vince Phelan said in a statement.

What does the week's leadership news change for Torrid?

Torrid Chief Financial Officer Paula Dempsey will exit the apparel retailer to pursue a new opportunity, the company announced Monday. Dempsey spent just under four years at Torrid after leaving Mattress Firm, per LinkedIn. She will remain through mid-November to support the transition.

Torrid named Will Langley as interim CFO, effective Wednesday. Langley spent about 20 years at Belk until 2025. CEO Lisa Harper led Belk from 2016 until 2021, and the appointment reconnects her with a long-time colleague.

"I am excited to welcome Will to Torrid," Harper said in a statement. "He is a seasoned finance leader whose breadth of experience and strategic contributions at Belk make him well suited to guide our finance organization. Having worked with Will for many years, I look forward to the perspective he will bring to Torrid as we continue to execute on our priorities."

For Torrid's finance function, the message is continuity: a two-month handover, an interim leader the CEO knows well, and no stated change in strategic priorities.

Foot Locker doubles down on basketball

The latest iteration of Foot Locker's "Hoops Lives Here" campaign launched this week, starring NBA player Cooper Flagg. In the spot, Flagg stocks the store alongside associates with the latest releases from his brand sponsor, New Balance.

The campaign sits inside a broader basketball strategy. Foot Locker recently became the athletic footwear retailer for the New York Knicks, and this week it celebrated the team's championship win with exclusive footwear and apparel at its 33rd Street store in New York City.

"Foot Locker has always been the home for basketball, connecting fans to the athletes, products and culture that define the game," Chief Marketing Officer Brett O'Brien said in a statement. "As we tip off a new NBA season, we're proud to partner with New Balance on this new chapter of 'Hoops Lives Here,' bringing fans closer to the game through product, storytelling and experiences."

Tecovas builds the world's largest cowboy hat

Western boot brand Tecovas and Circuit of The Americas have installed the world's largest cowboy hat at The Circuit, with Guinness World Records certification to prove it. The structure recreates Tecovas' Cattleman Cowboy Hat and measures 43 feet wide, 47 feet long and 17 feet tall, excluding piers. It debuted ahead of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix and features a fully operational bar beneath the brim.

"The World's Largest Cowboy Hat belongs in Texas, and there's no better place to welcome fans from around the world with a statement this big," Circuit of The Americas chairman Bobby Epstein said in a statement. "This is a beautiful piece of art with a practical purpose — a place for fans to gather, enjoy some shade, and experience a little Texas hospitality."

Child care costs press on household budgets

The share of U.S. households whose monthly child care costs exceed $2,000 has more than doubled in the last three years, according to research this week from the Bank of America Institute. Households paying $1,000 or less have declined over the same period. Last month, child care and school fees rose more than rent or medical services, the report said, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The burden falls hardest on middle-aged generations. More than half of households paying for child care were older millennials, followed by younger millennials at 20% and Gen X at 16%. Over the past three months, growth in older millennial households earning more than one paycheck has abated, suggesting child care costs may be shaping work decisions — a dynamic the researchers said affects women in particular.

For retailers heading into the holidays, the signal is direct: the customer groups most likely to buy children's apparel and family products are the ones absorbing the fastest-rising essential cost.
