A new IAB report finds 43% of CTV buyers have little or no confidence in the inventory they buy, even as show-level reporting gains ground in the market.

Confidence in connected TV inventory remains a serious problem for advertisers. A new report from the IAB found that 43% of CTV buyers say they have little or no confidence in the inventory they are buying.

The figure lands at a moment when the market is pushing for greater program-level visibility. As part of that shift, show-level reporting and optimization have become an increasingly important part of the conversation among buyers, according to AdExchanger's coverage of the findings.

The demand is straightforward. CTV buyers want more transparency into where their ads actually run. In practice, that means moving beyond opaque aggregations of inventory and toward reporting that tells an advertiser which programs — and which shows — carried their messages.

But the IAB data points to a deeper structural issue, one that AdExchanger frames as a transparency gap. Better data about where ads run does not automatically translate into control over where ads run. Even as show-level reporting improves, buyers may still find they cannot act on that visibility at the show level when it comes to optimization and buying decisions.

That distinction matters for marketing teams planning CTV spend. Reporting tells a buyer what happened after the fact. Optimization requires the ability to influence outcomes in advance — to select, exclude, or weight specific shows within a campaign. The gap between the two is where buyer frustration appears concentrated.

The 43% figure from the IAB gives that frustration a number. It signals that nearly half of the buying side distrusts the fundamentals of what it is purchasing in CTV, a channel where inventory flows through complex supply paths and where the connection between a bought impression and the content around it is not always clear to the advertiser.

For marketers, the implications are practical. When evaluating CTV partners and platforms, questions about inventory confidence belong at the top of the checklist, alongside pricing and reach. Buyers should ask not only whether a partner can report at the show level, but whether that reporting is paired with genuine show-level control.

The direction of travel in the market is toward more visibility, and show-level reporting is a growing piece of that conversation. Whether visibility turns into control — and how quickly — will determine whether buyer confidence in CTV inventory improves from the low point the IAB has now documented.
