Behr Paint CMO Andy Lopez: Why AI Can Never Replace Great Agencies
Behr Paint CMO Andy Lopez tells Marketing Vanguard how 'color paralysis' shapes the paint journey, why AI can't replace agency partners, and how Home Depot planning works.

Behr Paint's chief marketing officer, Andy Lopez, sat down with host Jenny Rooney on Adweek's Marketing Vanguard podcast to talk about turning consumer friction into brand opportunity — and why AI still cannot replace strong agency relationships.
One of Behr's biggest challenges sits at the moment of decision. Lopez calls it "color paralysis" — consumers love the idea of repainting a room, then freeze when it comes time to pick a shade. According to Lopez, it is one of the biggest pain points in the paint journey, and Behr builds its marketing around giving shoppers confidence at the point of choice, not just inspiration beforehand.
That principle shapes how Lopez evaluates creative work. The strongest marketing ideas, he argues, start by solving something real for the consumer — a test he applies to everything from campaign concepts to Behr's Color of the Year program, which connects color forecasting to actual consumer behavior.
Lopez brings a two-sided perspective to the agency-brand relationship. He began his career agency-side, including a stint at Saatchi in Los Angeles working on Toyota, before joining Behr more than nine years ago. At Behr, he now leads an integrated marketing organization spanning brand, product marketing and commercialization, combining consumer insights, innovation and go-to-market strategy.
His agency experience informs a clear view of what makes a partnership work: the best agency partners behave like extensions of the brand team rather than outside vendors. That closeness, he suggests, is precisely what AI cannot replicate in strategic marketing relationships.
Lopez does not dismiss AI, though. His recommended use is creating capacity inside the marketing organization, rather than simply cutting costs — freeing teams to do higher-value strategic work.
The conversation also covers Behr's long-standing exclusive retail partnership with Home Depot. Lopez discusses how exclusive retail partnerships work when both brands plan together, treating the relationship as joint planning rather than pure distribution.
He also touches on the art and science of color forecasting, and how Behr turns trend data into decisions that land with actual shoppers.
The episode addresses several core questions for marketers: why consumer confidence matters as much as consumer inspiration, how to identify and solve friction points like color paralysis, and how to structure agency relationships that AI tools cannot substitute for.
